Tip

Pikuach nefesh (preservation of life) overrides all Shabbat prohibitions. If a siren sounds, you may — and must — use your phone, carry items, and do whatever is needed to reach shelter safely. This is not a leniency; it is halacha.

6.2 During Shabbat / Hag

  • Sirens are your primary alert. Keep windows slightly open so you can hear outdoor sirens
  • TV or radio must stay on and audible throughout Shabbat — this is your only real-time information source
  • Know your shelter route in the dark — no phone torch available (unless siren sounds)
  • After an alert, stay in shelter for 10 minutes or until all-clear on TV/radio

Warning

If you hear a siren on Shabbat: Move to shelter immediately. Carry children, phone, go bag — whatever you need. There is no halachic question here.

Based on Home Front Command protocol as of 20 March 2026. Consult your rabbi for specific halachic guidance.
